About Performance & 4WD Clutch and Brake Upgrades in Adelaide
The factory clutch and brake system in most 4WDs and performance vehicles is engineered for standard use at standard weight. Add a caravan GVM of 3,500 kg, a set of 33-inch tyres, a diesel tune adding 40% more torque, or repeated track-day braking, and the factory components are operating well outside what they were designed for. The result is clutch slip under load, brake fade on long descents, or premature component wear that replaces one set of parts with another identical set that will fail again in the same conditions.
All Clutch & Brake has specialised in clutch and brake systems in Adelaide since 1984. We supply and fit heavy-duty clutch kits from Exedy, Terrain Tamer, BRC Performance, and NPC, and we stock performance brake components from DBA, Bendix, Intima, and Project Mu. Every clutch replacement includes in-house flywheel machining — we do not send flywheels out, and we do not skip this step.
Before Upgrading the Clutch — Check the Hydraulics First
One of the most common and expensive mistakes in 4WD servicing is replacing a clutch when the actual problem is a failing clutch master cylinder or slave cylinder. The symptoms are similar — a clutch pedal that feels soft, has reduced resistance, or sits low and is slow to return can indicate hydraulic failure rather than a worn clutch disc. Replacing the clutch kit without diagnosing the hydraulic circuit first results in the new clutch exhibiting the same pedal symptoms within days.
We diagnose the full clutch system before recommending a kit. If the issue is hydraulic, we can recondition or replace the master and slave cylinders without pulling the gearbox — a fraction of the cost and time. If the clutch disc itself is slipping (RPM rising faster than road speed, particularly under load going uphill), that is genuine clutch wear and a replacement or upgrade is warranted.
Heavy-Duty 4WD Clutch Kits — Choosing the Right Spec for Your Use Case
There is no single "best" heavy-duty clutch kit — the correct kit depends on how the vehicle is used. Buying a competition-spec clutch for a caravan tower adds unnecessary pedal weight and clutch bite aggression that makes daily driving unpleasant. Buying an entry-level HD kit for a remapped HiLux making 190hp will produce the same slip as the worn factory unit it replaced.
Entry level — Exedy HD and equivalents: suited to stock or lightly modified 4WDs that have not been tuned and are used for regular towing without significant power modifications. Exedy is a Japanese OEM and aftermarket manufacturer of high quality — the HD variant increases clamp load by approximately 25–30% over factory. Not suitable for remapped diesel engines. Exedy 8006HD for the N70 HiLux KUN26 (post-06/2008, 275mm flywheel) is a common fitment.
Mid level — BRC Performance, Terrain Tamer HD: suited to remapped 4WDs making up to approximately 350hp, heavy towers, and vehicles running 33" tyres or larger. Terrain Tamer HD kits are Japanese-made with anti-burst casting, anodised cover assembly, extra-strength damper springs, and ultra-premium friction material. BRC Performance kits are organic compound and designed specifically for the Australian tuned-diesel market. Single mass flywheel conversion kits available for vehicles running dual mass flywheels (DMF) — eliminates ongoing DMF replacement cost.
High level — NPC Super HD with billet flywheel: suited to heavily tuned 4WDs (high-flow injectors, compound turbo, 250–300hp), competition use, or owners who want the maximum available torque capacity. NPC are an Australian company who modify Exedy friction material and combine it with custom billet flywheels in larger diameters, increasing clutch surface area and clamping force. The NPC 7678-1D kit with billet flywheel is rated to 300hp and is the benchmark for tuned LandCruiser 70 Series and heavily modified HiLux builds.
We also recommend fitting a braided stainless clutch hydraulic line at the time of clutch replacement. The factory rubber clutch line contains a dampener that introduces a soft, spongy feel into the pedal. A braided line bypasses this dampener and gives a firmer, more direct pedal feel — particularly noticeable on NPC and competition-spec clutches where precise engagement is important.

Performance Brake Upgrades — Pads, Rotors, and Big Brake Kits
Not every vehicle that needs better braking performance requires a big brake kit. For most towing, 4WD, and spirited street use, the most cost-effective upgrade is a quality slotted or cross-drilled rotor paired with a higher-performance pad compound. A DBA T2 Street Series slotted rotor removes brake dust and gas buildup from between the pad and rotor surface, reducing fade during extended braking. Paired with a Bendix Ultimate or Intima SR compound pad, the improvement in feel and fade resistance over standard components is significant.
For track day and competition use, pad compound selection matters more than rotor design. Project Mu HC+ and NS400 compounds are suited to track temperatures and will not develop the glazing that standard or street pads suffer at sustained high temperatures. However, competition-compound pads have minimal effectiveness when cold — they require a warm-up period before achieving full bite. For a car that goes from school run to track day, a street/track compound like Intima SR or Ferodo DS2500 is the more practical choice.
For 4WD towing upgrades specifically — LandCruiser 200 Series, 300 Series, and Patrol Y62 towing GVM loads — the DBA 4000 Series XS Slotted rotor with a Bendix 4WD compound pad is a proven combination. The slotting increases rotor surface area exposed to airflow and reduces the thermal mass at the rotor surface, which directly addresses the brake fade that develops on long downhill stretches with a heavy van behind. Braided stainless brake lines at the same time ensure the hydraulic circuit can handle the thermal load without line expansion reducing pedal feel.
Big brake kits — larger diameter rotors, multi-piston calipers — are appropriate for performance cars where the standard rotor diameter is a limiting factor and increased caliper piston area is needed for consistent high-temperature performance. We source and fit kits from Brembo and DBA for popular applications including Subaru WRX/STI, Ford Mustang, HSV vehicles, and Nissan Skyline/GTR. All big brake kits require verification of wheel clearance before ordering — we check this before committing to any kit.
Pricing Guide — Heavy-Duty Clutch Kits and Performance Brake Upgrades
All prices are based on current Australian market pricing and industry averages. Final cost depends on vehicle make, model, and year, current supplier pricing for the specific clutch kit, whether a new flywheel or DMF conversion is required, and labour time for the specific vehicle. Kit prices change with supplier pricing and currency — call us on 08 8277 8122 for a current quote for your vehicle and use case. We will not recommend a more expensive kit than your application requires.

Who Is This For?
4WD owners who tow caravans, trailers, or heavy loads regularly and whose factory clutch is showing slip under load; drivers who have had their vehicle tuned or remapped and need a clutch rated above the new torque output; off-road enthusiasts running larger tyres (33s and above) who are placing additional torque load on the factory clutch; performance and enthusiast car owners wanting improved braking bite, fade resistance, or a big brake kit for track use; and fleet operators requiring heavy-duty brake upgrades for commercial vehicles under sustained high-load use.
