About This Service
About General Vehicle Servicing & Expert Repairs in Adelaide
A workshop that has spent 42 years specialising in the most mechanically demanding components on a vehicle — clutch systems and braking systems — brings a different level of diagnostic rigour to a general service than a franchise mechanic working through a standard checklist. When we service a vehicle, we inspect the clutch for early signs of slip, check the brake pad and rotor condition with the same attention we give a dedicated brake job, and assess the hydraulic circuit for any signs of deterioration. Most general mechanics do not do this to the same standard because it is not their specialty.
All Clutch & Brake has operated from its St Marys workshop since 1984. We service all makes and models of passenger vehicles, 4WDs, and commercial vehicles for logbook servicing, scheduled maintenance, expert fault diagnosis, and pre-purchase inspections.
Logbook Servicing in Adelaide — You Don't Need to Go to the Dealer
Under ACCC consumer protection provisions confirmed by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission, you do not need to have your vehicle serviced at a franchised dealer to maintain your factory warranty. Any qualified workshop can sign and stamp your logbook, provided the service follows the manufacturer's specifications for that interval, uses parts and oils that meet the manufacturer's specification, and is carried out by qualified technicians.
We service the following at every logbook service interval:
Engine oil drain and refill to manufacturer-specified grade and quantity (Penrite, Castrol, or Mobil 1 to the correct viscosity — e.g. 0W-20 for most recent Toyota/Mazda petrol engines, 5W-30 for most Ford and Volkswagen diesel engines, 5W-40 for most BMW and Mercedes engines). Oil filter replacement. Air filter replacement (at specified interval). Cabin air filter replacement (where applicable). Spark plug inspection or replacement (at spark plug service interval — typically every 40,000–60,000 km for copper, 100,000 km for iridium). Brake fluid test for water content (replace when moisture content exceeds 3.5%, or every 2 years per most manufacturers' specifications). Coolant condition and level check. Transmission fluid level check. Tyre pressure and tread depth check. Visual inspection of brake pad thickness and rotor surface condition, clutch hydraulic components, belts, hoses, cooling system components, exhaust, suspension joints, and lights. Logbook signed and stamped.
Minor, Logbook, and Major Services — What Each One Covers
Minor service: oil, oil filter, and safety inspection. No logbook stamp — suited to vehicles outside warranty on an interim service between logbook intervals, or vehicles without a logbook that need basic maintenance.
Logbook service: all manufacturer-specified items for the specific service interval (15,000 km / 30,000 km / 60,000 km etc.), including all filters, fluid checks, and inspections specified for that interval in the vehicle's service schedule. Logbook signed and stamped.
Major service: full logbook service plus the additional items that fall due at 60,000 km or 90,000 km intervals — typically spark plug replacement (if iridium or platinum plugs are specified), coolant flush and refill with fresh OAT or HOAT coolant to manufacturer's specification, brake fluid replacement, and timing belt inspection. Timing belt replacement (typically 100,000 km or 5 years for most petrol engines — check your logbook for the specific interval) is a major service item that, if missed, can result in engine damage on interference engines.
Engine Diagnostics — Reading the Fault, Not Just the Code
A check engine light (MIL — malfunction indicator lamp) stores a fault code in the vehicle's ECU that describes which sensor or system triggered the warning. Reading that code with an OBD2 scanner tells you the fault code number — P0300 for random misfire, P0420 for catalyst efficiency below threshold, P0171 for system lean (bank 1). What it does not tell you is why. A P0171 lean code on a Toyota Camry can mean a dirty mass airflow sensor, a vacuum leak, a failing fuel pressure regulator, or a worn oxygen sensor — all different repairs with different costs.
We use live data stream analysis alongside fault code extraction — examining fuel trim values, oxygen sensor waveforms, mass airflow readings, and ignition timing advance in real time — to identify the root cause before recommending a repair.
Expert Repairs — What We Fix
Steering and suspension: shock absorber and strut replacement (Monroe or KYB — the two dominant independent brands for Australian-market applications), coil spring replacement, ball joint replacement, control arm bush replacement, and steering rack diagnosis. Suspension wear is often identified during a logbook service before it becomes a handling or tyre wear problem.
Cooling system: thermostat replacement, water pump replacement, radiator hose replacement (upper and lower), radiator repair or replacement, coolant flush and refill to manufacturer's specification (OAT — organic acid technology — coolant for Toyota, Honda, Mazda; HOAT for most European applications). Overheating is a common fault that escalates to head gasket damage if not addressed early.
Exhaust: flexi section replacement (the corrugated bellows section that absorbs engine movement — a common failure point on high-mileage vehicles), cat-back exhaust repairs, muffler replacement, and exhaust manifold gasket replacement.
Electrical starting system: alternator replacement (supply and fit), starter motor replacement (supply and fit). Battery testing and replacement using Century or Exide batteries. A failing alternator produces under-voltage at idle that is often misdiagnosed as a battery problem — we test charging system output before replacing parts.
Safety inspections: full roadworthy-standard inspection of brakes, tyres, lights, steering, suspension, and visible structural components. We do not issue roadworthy certificates (this is a licensed registration inspection function in South Australia) but our safety inspections provide a comprehensive written assessment of the vehicle's condition.
Pre-Purchase Inspections — What a Drivetrain Specialist Finds That Others Miss
A pre-purchase inspection from a general mechanic covers the obvious: service history, oil leaks, tyre condition, lights, and a scan for fault codes. A pre-purchase inspection from a clutch and brake specialist covers all of that plus the components most general mechanics assess superficially: clutch pedal feel and engagement point (a worn clutch disc is in the final 20% of its life before it starts slipping noticeably), brake pad and rotor condition including rotor thickness measurement against minimum thickness spec, wheel cylinder and caliper condition for signs of leaking hydraulic fluid, and flywheel surface condition where visible.
Pricing Guide — Vehicle Servicing and Repairs
Guide prices are based on typical passenger vehicles and current parts and oil pricing. Final cost depends on your vehicle's make, model, and year; the specific items due at your service interval according to your logbook; and current oil and parts pricing at the time of booking. European vehicles (BMW, Mercedes, Audi, Volkswagen) typically use manufacturer-specified fully synthetic oil in larger quantities and at shorter intervals, which increases service cost compared to a Japanese or Korean vehicle. Call us on 08 8277 8122 with your vehicle registration and the kilometres showing — we will give you a specific price before you book.

Who Is This For?
Drivers who want logbook servicing done by a qualified workshop without paying dealer prices — independent repairers can stamp your logbook without voiding your factory warranty under ACCC consumer protection provisions; vehicle owners who have a warning light, unusual noise, or performance issue that needs proper diagnosis before money is spent on parts; people buying a used car who want an independent pre-purchase inspection from a workshop with deep drivetrain expertise; fleet and commercial vehicle operators needing scheduled servicing across multiple vehicles; and existing clutch and brake customers who want their whole vehicle maintained at the same workshop rather than splitting between specialists.
